TikTok Tests New Micro-Drama Feed: AI Zombies and Bikini Gorillas Go Viral

The short-form video giant, TikTok, has launched a limited test of a new, dedicated micro-drama feed within its main app, dubbed "TikTok Short Drama." This initiative underscores TikTok's serious intent to capture a larger share of the booming vertical drama market. Currently available to a select group of users over 18 in the US and other regions, the feed mirrors content found on TikTok's separate app, PineDrama.

What's making waves are some of the most popular series, which include highly unusual, often AI-generated content. Viewers are reportedly captivated by everything from "depressed polar bears dancing on beaches" to "AI-generated zombies" and even a "Burger CEO". These bite-sized dramas, typically one to five minutes long, often feature themes of sexy billionaires, sordid love affairs, and revenge, proving immensely popular in China, and now gaining significant traction in the US.

The move comes as mini-drama apps collectively pulled in an estimated $1.4 billion in the US last year, with industry leaders like DramaBox and ReelShort operating on a freemium model. TikTok's feed, however, offers all episodes for free, potentially shaking up the monetization landscape and offering a powerful platform for new creators to gain visibility without massive marketing spends.
